Coaching Staff

Unlike most other travel lacrosse clubs, here at Chauncey Boys our staff has precious little turnover.  We are not about just getting college kids with good player resumes (though we have those too) to try to draw in customers; rather, we are about getting solid coaches who are consistent, knowledgable, dependable and give their hearts and souls to this organization and the kids in it.  We retain excellent coaches and the only great players we are interested in are the ones who play in, or who have played in, Chauncey's honor.

Born and raised in Baltimore MD in a generational D1 lacrosse family, Patrick had a lacrosse stick in his hand before he could walk. Patrick played for St. Paul’s School for Boys for 13 years and club ball with Cockeysville which has produced more DI, DII & DIII All-Americans than any other rec program in the country. While with Cockeysville, Patrick broke the Maryland points record and led his teams to many undefeated seasons.

In high school, Patrick started as a sophomore and led St. Paul’s to a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association championship.  His team was ranked the number one team in the nation. His senior year, he set the single-season assist record and was a top 10 recruit in the country. Patrick was also selected as the team captain for the Maryland Free State team where he made the final cut out of 250 high school players. Patrick chose to play for D1 Towson University for its rich lacrosse history and academics.

After graduation, Patrick moved to the Sacramento area where he helped design and develop youth and high school programs and provides private coaching.  Patrick now serves at the Boys Lacrosse Director for the West Valley Red Hawks.

In his "spare time," Patrick works as a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch, plays golf and tennis, skis, takes on triathalons and gives his undivided attention to his very understanding better half, Allison Takahashi and their English bulldog, Grammy.

Rob has been with the West Valley Redhawks for more than a decade and Chauncey Boys since its inception.  Having sadly been deprived of the lacrosse experience in his youth (it just hadn't yet made it here), Rob was a football guy (Bellarmine, Saratoga High School, Santa Clara University).  Having coached a number of sports over three decades, Rob transitioned over into lacrosse in 2011 (being pulled over his by sons, Austin, Scotty and Carson - all faceoff middies for the Redhawks, COB and Los Gatos High School).  During this time, he has coached boys at all youth levels from U9 through U14, rookie through "A" teams.  In 2014, he took the Redhawks’ first-ever U11A team to the NCJLA playoffs and repeated that again in 2015 finishing the season ranked 5th in Northern California. In 2018, Rob served as an assistant coach on the Redhawks U14A team that played for the NCJLA championship.

Rob currently serves as President for both the West Valley Red Hawks and for Chauncey Boys Lacrosse.

On the travel-team side, in 2012 and 2013, Rob ran his own South Bay Red Riders travel team that competed in major tournaments throughout California. In 2014, he merged the Red Riders with All-West Lacrosse where he continued to coach and then, after that, helped launch the Chauncey Boys program.  After winning their first tournament for COB, Rob’s team received a bid to compete in a national championship tournament in Florida.  Since then, Rob has led his COB teams to double digit tournament championships.

Coach Bill "The Creator" Cleary is one of the founding members of the West Valley Redhawks Lacrosse Club along with AJ O’Brien, Joe Christie and Mark Lipscomb. He and AJ together co-founded the Chauncey Boys in 2015 with the help of an all-volunteer coaching staff. Bill began his lacrosse career on Long Island, playing for one of the top high school teams—the Uniondale High School Black Knights. After high school he played for Nassau College before going on to club lacrosse in Western New York. While attending graduate school (SUNY/Buffalo), Coach Cleary learned the box lacrosse game while playing with the Seneca Indians (Golden Eagles) on the Cattaraugus Indian Reservation.

In 1981, Bill joined Apple Computer and got involved with the local lacrosse scene in Northern California. Since then, Bill has coached every level of youth and high school lacrosse in the South Bay, Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz winning many league and tournament championships.

Coach Cleary serves the Chauncey Boys as a Senior Coach working with the coaching staff and helping with recruitment efforts. Coach Cleary’s philosophical approach is that lacrosse is a team sport with a long and proud tradition that dates back to the 1600’s and the Iroquois Indians. Great youth and  high school lacrosse teams require committed parents and players along with dedicated coaches who have a passion for the game. The goal for all COB teams is to prepare our players for very competitive high school and collegiate play, while emphasizing advanced skill development and improved lacrosse IQ. Coach Cleary believes that the role of a youth lacrosse coach should include the emotional growth and maturation of each player by fostering team play, sportsmanship, leadership skills and a passion for the game.

Three of Bill’s sons played lacrosse at the youth level with the Redhawks. His stepson (Logan Lichorowic) has also been an integral part of the family passion for the game. Son, Ian, went on to play lacrosse at St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont.  Bill’s youngest son, Tomas, earned All-America honors as an attackman for Scotts Valley High School and currently attends Santa Clara University where he continues to enjoy his love of playing lacrosse.

Most recently, Coach Cleary coached the Spring 2022 14U West Valley Red Hawks to an undefeated season.

Ryan played lacrosse in Santa Cruz as a youth player and then moved on to play goalie at Scotts Valley High School for some excellent SVHS teams. Ryan played with Chauncey Boys in its nascent years winning many tournament championships. Ryan moved on to play lacrosse for Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. After graduating, he returned to coach the West Valley Red Hawks 14U team which had an undefeated record in Spring 2022.

Willy Reilly came up through the West Valley Red Hawks program as a kid. He played travel lacrosse since he was a 12U player first with the South Bay Red Riders then All-West Lacrosse and then, ultimately, with Chauncey Boys since its innaugeral season. While he played defense as a youngster, once he arrived at Bellarmine College Prep, he switched to goalie. At Bellarmine, Willy became one of the best high school goalies in the San Francisco Bay Area fetching interest from NCAA Division 1 schools.  Ultimately, Willy decided to attend Colorado State University where he will be a sophomore for the 2022-23 year. Willy coaches the defense for the Summer 2022 Chauncey Boys Varsity team.

Coach Zack came up through the ranks with Coach Logan and played together on the Red Hawks state championship team.  Zack moved on to the University of Washington where he played football and lacrosse.  Zack has coached for Saratoga High School and currently coaches the University of Santa Cruz.  Coach Zack's signature is a tough, rugged, inspired defense.  Where Coach Logan takes the offensive focus, Coach Zack works the defensive end.  Always spirited, Zack knows how to work with lacrosse players both young and older.

Coach Zack knew Chauncey very well...they played and coached lacrosse together.  Coach Zack was also on the ground floor in developing the idea, success, and culture of Chauncey Boys.

Most recently, Coach Cleary coached the Spring 2022 14U West Valley Red Hawks to an undefeated season.

There are those people who are simply excellent coaches - no matter the sport. After coaching soccer for many years and watching his two older sons play lacrosse for the West Valley Red Hawks, Jose began coaching an 8U team for the Red Hawks in Spring 2022 where he guided his team to an incredible 20 wins! Jose is stepping up for Summer 2022 Chauncey Boys to help coach the 12U team.

Dom came up playing lacrosse for the West Valley Red Hawks, Bellarmine College Prep and Chauncey Boys Lacrosse. In 2022, Dom played NCAA Division 1 lacrosse for Drexel University in Philadelphia. Dom is coaching the COB 12U team for the 2022 Summer season.

Andrew grew up playing lacrosse in Oakland.  He currently leads the UC Santa Cruz lacrosse team where he plays face off middy.  Andrew coached for Chauncey Boys during the summer of 2021 where he proved himself an excellent high school coach. Andrew will be helping coach the Summer 2022 12U team. 12U team.
